Process of the Home Energy Audit
Each energy audit will include a blower-door test, a heating-system assessment, a base load audit, a health-and-safety evaluation and recommended building shell air sealing and insulation retrofits.
The audit takes about 2-3 hours and starts with a visual building shell inspection. We discuss with the homeowner the problems and concerns about the home. We measure air leakage true the blower-door test, we take infrared pictures, analyze flue gas on combustion appliances, and calculate Steady-State-Efficiency. Under worst-case depressurization test we check spillage, measure natural draft pressure and pressure difference between combustion appliance zone and outdoors. We perform gas leak test.
The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) sets minimum ventilation rates to ensure acceptable indoor air quality in homes.
The U.S.Department of Energy now recommends that a thermographic scan be done before purchasing a home, even on new homes.
To Do List Before The Energy Audit
- Close all the windows and doors on the building shell – we will do it before the audit starts
- Open all the doors inside of the thermal boundary – we will do it before the audit starts
- Clean out the ash and seal the fireplace (close the dumper and the front door of the fireplace if applicable) – owner require to do it before the audit, we will check it
- Turn off the heating and water heater system (only the pilot can be on), except if it is electrical – we will do it before the audit starts
- Keep away the kids and pests from the blower door through out the audit
- Make the refrigerator electrical connection accessible for the watt meter test – owner require to do it before the audit starts
